What is web-to-print?

Web-to-print refers to solutions in which customers use a web interface to access an automated publishing workflow. For example, a web-to-print solution might display a template on a web page to a user. The user could then create a version of the document by accessing and changing content displayed in the browser.

What is VDP?

Variable Data Publishing (VDP) refers to solutions that use database information to automatically populate templates and create many versions of the same document, each intended for a different person. As a result of this personalization, VDP campaigns often produce higher response rates than traditional marketing and advertising.

What's the difference between VDP and web-to-print?

Today, the definitions of web-to-print and VDP are blurring. Some solutions now combine elements of both VDP and web-to-print — for example, a website that allows users to create, preview, and edit VDP jobs combines the technologies.

What is Adobe Scene7®?

The Adobe Scene7 hosted media platform is an easy-to-use streamlined publishing system for cross-media workflows. It is a solution for e-commerce and multichannel marketing companies worldwide that need to publish rich content to engage their audience and drive online business. This toolkit includes a console to monitor and report the results of these tests, as well as prebuilt scripts that enable you to run tests out of the box. The Performance and Scalability Toolkit also contains guidance on how to optimize the performance of InDesign Server.

Licensing InDesign CS4 Server as part of an automated publishing solution

What is the licensing model for Adobe InDesign CS4 Server?

There are two main licensing models for InDesign Server: Premium and Limited. Premium is for use with automated publishing solutions offered as public-facing business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) services, made accessible to customers or users via the Internet. This is often described within the industry as web-to-print.

This license is also appropriate for solutions that reside, and are only accessed by users, within an internal network, in the case where less than two-thirds of the computers accessing the automated solution have either InDesign or InCopy installed. There is no limit on the number of users for this license.

Limited is for use with automated publishing solutions that are made available within a company's internal network and where more than two-thirds of the computers accessing the automated solution on the internal network have either InDesign or InCopy installed. There is no limit on the number of users for this license.

For both Limited and Premium you can choose single or multi-instance licenses. A single instance license allows InDesign Server to start up only once on any server, regardless of how many cores or CPUs are available. A multi-instance license allows you to start up as many instances of InDesign Server on the same server hardware as you like.

For further details, contact either an Adobe Solution Partner or an Adobe representative.

How does Adobe measure multi-instance usage?

For InDesign Server, Adobe measures multi-instance usage by the total number of cores available in the server hardware, or the total number of cores made available to a virtualized operating system. Multi-instance licenses are available in four-core increments.

What is the process for licensing InDesign CS4 Server?

InDesign CS4 Server can be ordered through Adobe's Forms Licensing Program (FLP), either directly from Adobe or through an FLP reseller or distributor. Commercial development partners also have the option of licensing InDesign CS4 Server directly from Adobe through an ISV/OEM agreement.

What is the difference between an ISV/OEM agreement and an FLP agreement?

The FLP provides a simple business transaction model that allows for small unit orders without long-term commitments. It does not require a contract to be signed with Adobe.

An ISV/OEM agreement with Adobe takes longer to set up and will require a signed contract, as well as a number of other commitments. However, this agreement provides greater flexibility and more favorable pricing terms. ISV/OEM agreements do not allow commercial development partners to sell InDesign CS4 Server unbundled from their automated publishing solutions. Contact your Adobe partner manager or account manager for more information on these options.

Are there any other developer and evaluation licenses of InDesign CS4 Server?

Yes. In addition to production licenses, which are required for deploying live solutions, there are also developer, and development licenses.

Developer licenses, which are free of charge to commercial or in-house developers, allow the initial development of automated publishing solutions. This type of license includes the debug version of InDesign CS4 Server.

Development licenses are for use by customers who have finished developing a solution but want to deploy it in a staging or testing environment. This license is sold at a significantly discounted price and cannot be used for live production. It also does not include the debug version of InDesign Server.

Are separate licenses needed for backup or disaster recovery?

No. Copies of InDesign CS4 Server can be made for disaster recovery or backup in accordance with the license, but they cannot be used in any live production unless the production server fails. These copies should not be confused with cluster or load balancing configurations.

In addition to the FLP and ISV/OEM licensing programs, is InDesign CS4 Server sold under any other Adobe licensing programs?

If you are buying the InDesign CS4 Server component directly from Adobe, it is available only through the ISV/OEM or FLP licensing program.

Adobe provides a number of other licensing programs including the Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) and the Transactional Licensing Program (TLP), which are typically used by customers to purchase desktop software from Adobe via the traditional reseller channel. Customers who normally purchase Adobe software using TLP or CLP will not be able to purchase InDesign CS4 Server through these programs. The purchase of an InDesign CS4 Server license will also not contribute to the TLP or CLP points system.

InDesign CS4 Server support

How does Adobe support InDesign CS4 Server?

Adobe provides two types of support for InDesign CS4 Server. The first is developer support. This is designed for those developing solutions and allows for the purchase of support cases as needed.

The second type of support, Adobe Platinum Maintenance and Support, is intended for the end customer of a solution. Platinum Maintenance and Support provides free upgrades and enables you to receive bug fixes and updates. It also allows a development partner to engage with Adobe on your behalf for other necessary development-related support. If you are developing your own in-house solution, Platinum Maintenance and Support also provides an unlimited number of developer support cases.

If you are an Adobe partner developing a solution, you should probably purchase development support cases only. If you are a customer purchasing a solution from a partner, you need to purchase Platinum Maintenance and Support when you buy InDesign CS4 Server. If you are a customer developing an in-house solution, you have two choices: You can either purchase InDesign CS4 Server and enroll in Platinum Maintenance and Support at the beginning of your development process, or, while developing, you can use a free-of-charge developer license and purchase development support cases. However, when you deploy your solution, you are required to have Platinum Maintenance and Support.

How can a developer resolve technical support questions that arise when working with InDesign CS4 Server?

Developers with technical questions should open a development support case. This formal process is necessary so that the question can be tracked and answered by the appropriate technical resource.

Details of how to submit a development support case are provided either upon joining the Adobe Solution Partner Program at the Silver level, which includes a number of support cases, or upon purchase of one or more individual support cases.

What is included in Platinum Maintenance and Support?

Platinum Maintenance and Support is a comprehensive package designed to meet the needs of companies deploying publishing solutions. It provides a range of support services and offers personalized service and a deeper understanding of the customer's technical requirements, through senior-level technical support consultants. It includes:

  • Service for up to four authorized technical contacts from your organization
  • Unlimited phone, web, and e-mail access to Adobe Platinum support consultants
  • Priority-level case response times
  • Unlimited access to the online support service, eSupport
  • Remote diagnostics
  • Product upgrades
  • Maintenance releases
  • Eligibility for patches and hot fixes

How do I get access to InDesign Server updates?

While other desktop Adobe applications have periodic public updates, also known as dot releases, due to the complex and unique nature of the integration between InDesign Server and its broader publishing solutions, updates are not provided in a public forum for download.

If you purchase an InDesign Server solution from a partner, it is the responsibility of your solution partner to provide any updates that Adobe makes available for InDesign Server.

Customers and partners developing their own solutions powered by InDesign Server have access to regular updates through the InDesign family Rapid Release Program. For details on the Rapid Release Program, contact your Adobe representative.

What other resources are available to developers working with InDesign CS4 Server?

Developers may also find the Adobe Forums a useful resource. These forums provide an opportunity to post questions to other InDesign CS4 Server developers. However, they are not designed to be used in place of formal support, as there is no guarantee that a question will be answered.

Developers new to InDesign CS4 Server may also want to consider engaging with other partners who can provide additional support, guidance, or even development consultancy for a fee. A list of InDesign Server partners can be found in the partner finder.

Marketing and selling your solutions

How does Adobe support the sales and marketing efforts of its partners?

Adobe mainly supports the sales and marketing efforts of its development partners through the Adobe Solution Partner Program. This program provides:

  • Access to Adobe sales and marketing resources, including Powered by InDesign Server logos for use in user interfaces, as well as print and web marketing
  • Opportunities to be invited to attend tradeshows with Adobe
  • Support from Adobe's field sales teams
  • Additional marketing opportunities, such as website links and use of the Adobe Solution Provider Partner logo

See the Adobe Solution Partner Program page and your account manager for further details.

Being a member of the Adobe Solution Partner Program also makes you eligible for inclusion in the InDesign Server partner finder.

What can partners do to help Adobe market their companies and solutions?

You should make sure that an Adobe account manager or partner manager knows the pertinent details of your solution as it comes to market so that you can be considered for inclusion in the partner finder. The work you're doing with your customers may also be featured in case studies.

What should a partner do to be considered for inclusion in the InDesign CS4 Server partner finder?

You should have a shipping product with customer references. Alternatively, you should be offering development training and support services to other partners or customers.

Support for the PowerPC platform

Apple recently announced that future versions of its operating system will not support the PowerPC® platform. What are Adobe's plans to support the PowerPC platform for the Creative Suite family of products?

Adobe intends for future versions of the Creative Suite range of products to run on Intel based Macs with no support for their installation on PowerPC systems.

I am a Creative Suite customer who currently uses a PowerPC based computer. Will my current version also run on an Intel® based Mac, or do I have to buy a completely new version?

Creative Suite 3 and Creative Suite 4 products are Universal applications, so they can be installed on either a PowerPC based Mac or an Intel based Mac that meets the minimum system requirements of the Creative Suite version being installed.

I am a customer running an earlier version of Creative Suite software on a PowerPC based system. What are my options for upgrading to Creative Suite 4?

Adobe has a number of upgrade paths available to current Creative Suite customers. Check out the upgrade eligibility tool for full details on your upgrade options.

I am a volume licensing customer. How do I get updates for my Creative Suite components?

Adobe recommends following your company's in-house guidance for managing updates. Contact the IT or technical person who manages your Adobe licenses for information about corporate policies on updating software.

Will Adobe continue to support the version of Creative Suite that I am currently running on PowerPC?

Adobe does not plan to make any changes to the existing complimentary and paid support programs that are enjoyed by our customers. For details on these programs, visit the support page.

I use a number of plug-ins with my current version of Creative Suite. What support will be offered for these products running on a PowerPC based system?

For third-party products, contact the manufacturer for guidance on their ongoing support for the PowerPC platform.

Will Adobe continue to release patches for PowerPC based systems running Creative Suite?

No, Adobe will no longer develop for this platform other than for critical issues that may arise.

Why is Adobe making this decision?

Creative Suite customers benefit from working on the latest hardware and operating systems. The majority of PowerPC platform users have transitioned to more current configurations, prompting Adobe to suspend support for the PowerPC platform.

Why is Adobe making this announcement now?

Adobe recognizes the investment customers have in our software and believes in giving fair notice of any changes regarding the operating systems and hardware that our solutions support. By announcing our intentions early, we hope customers will have time to plan their migration strategies accordingly.

Support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Are Creative Suite 4 products and components compatible with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6)?

Yes. Working closely with Apple, Adobe has tested the Creative Suite 4 products and components and determined they are compatible with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the latest version of Apple's operating system.

Is Snow Leopard important to Creative Suite 4 customers?

Yes. Mac OS X Snow Leopard delivers a productive computing experience for creative professionals. Adobe and Apple have worked together closely to test that Creative Suite 4 products and components run reliably and efficiently on Intel-based systems running Snow Leopard with optimal performance and user experience. See below for known issues we have discovered in our testing. As with any new release of an operating system, there may be additional unexpected issues that arise that may not have been uncovered during our testing efforts.

Do Adobe Creative Suite 3 products support Snow Leopard?

Adobe has worked closely with Apple throughout the Snow Leopard development and testing process. Adobe has conducted its own additional testing of CS3 software on Snow Leopard and is confident that our CS3 applications will function as expected with Snow Leopard. Adobe did uncover some noncritical issues, which are documented in a Knowledgebase article.

Will Adobe continue to test its CS4 applications on Snow Leopard?

Yes. Adobe sets high standards of quality, stability, and reliability for our professional products, and we worked closely with Apple to test that Creative Suite 4 products and components run on Snow Leopard. See below for known issues we have discovered in our testing. As with any new release of an operating system, there may be additional unexpected issues that arise that may not have been uncovered during our testing efforts. If you encounter any issues, please report them by going to the bug report page. Note that we do not respond to submissions; however, we do review the information closely with the appropriate teams and continue to test and monitor the user experience.

Do any CS4 applications require updates to be compatible with Snow Leopard?

If you are running the latest updates for Creative Suite software, your software should operate on Snow Leopard. Updates are required for Adobe Acrobat®, Adobe Reader®, and Adobe Flash® Player software:

  • Adobe Acrobat: Acrobat users need to have version 9.1 or later installed in order to produce Adobe PDF files on Snow Leopard. Select the PDF button in the Print dialog box and choose Save as Adobe PDF to access the new feature.
  • Adobe Flash Player: The initial release of Snow Leopard includes an earlier version of Flash Player than what is currently available from Adobe. Adobe recommends all users update to the latest version of Flash Player (10.0.32.18), which supports Snow Leopard and is available for download.

We encourage our customers to review other documented issues and information regarding updates at Adobe support.

How do I install any of the required updates for Snow Leopard compatibility?

For Acrobat, users will need to update to version 9.1 or later to operate on Snow Leopard. Adobe Flash Player must also be updated to work with Mac OS X Snow Leopard; it is available for download. Updates for Acrobat and other Creative Suite products and components are made available through the Adobe Updater, a utility that is installed with Adobe products or components to manage the download and installation of updates for you. As long as the automated notification feature in Adobe Updater is turned on, you will be alerted automatically when the updates become available. You can then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the updates. Alternatively, you can open the CS4 product or component that requires an update, choose Help > Updates to open the Adobe Updater, check all of the updates you want, and the click Download and Install Updates. Lastly, you can also visit the downloads page to monitor when updates are posted, and then download and install the updates for each relevant CS4 product or component.

Is Adobe aware of any major issues, bugs, or odd user experiences when using CS4 or Acrobat products or components with Snow Leopard?

Adobe Creative Suite 4 and Acrobat solutions are thoroughly tested at Adobe in conjunction with Apple to confirm our solutions perform to the high standards and level of performance, quality, and user experience our customers expect. In our testing, we did discover a few functional areas that display unusual user experiences. The most notable issues or updates are:

  • Adobe Acrobat: Note that Acrobat users need to have version 9.1 or later installed in order to produce Adobe PDF files on Snow Leopard. Select the PDF button in the Print dialog box and choose Save as Adobe PDF to access the new feature. Download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Adobe Flash Player: The initial release of Snow Leopard includes an earlier version of Adobe Flash Player than what is currently available from Adobe. Adobe recommends all users update to the latest, most secure version of Flash Player (10.0.32.18), which supports Snow Leopard and is available for download.
  • Adobe Drive used with Adobe Version Cue® CS4 Server: At this time, Adobe Drive does not run on Snow Leopard. For customers that are dependent on Adobe Drive and Version Cue, we recommend they do not upgrade to Snow Leopard at this time.
  • Adobe CSI Extensions: Users may be unable to update their CSI Extensions via the Connections Panel. The cause is related to interaction between CS4 products and Apple's Java™ Runtime Environment (JRE) v.1.6. The update will appear to be complete, but the user will again receive notification that the update is available at every update check interval. Users who have not installed the CSI update v1.0.1 will not be affected, but they also will not receive notifications about available extension updates. Users who installed the CSI update v.1.0.1 and the corresponding extension updates before upgrading to Snow Leopard will also not be affected by the issue. Adobe Extensions affected include the Connections panel itself, the Adobe Kuler™ extension, Search for Help, and Share My Screen. Adobe plans to have an additional update for the CSI Extensions and related files as soon as possible.

Visit Adobe support to check the Knowledgebase for the latest information related to Snow Leopard.

I use a number of plug-ins with my current version of Creative Suite. Are these plug-ins compatible with Creative Suite running Snow Leopard?

Customers are encouraged to check plug-in compatibility by contacting the plug-in vendor before upgrading to Snow Leopard. For third-party products, contact the manufacturer for guidance on their support for Snow Leopard.

You may want to contact the IT person who manages your Adobe licenses for information about your corporate policies on updating software. For volume licensing customers, there is a Knowledgebase article for IT managers on how to silently push installations of CS4. For individual users, there is an Adobe Updater (choose Help > Updates) to download and install updates for CS4 products and components on individuals.

Are the trial versions of Adobe CS4 products and components compatible with Snow Leopard?

Support for Windows 7

Are Creative Suite 4 products and components compatible with the new Windows 7 operating system?

Yes. Adobe is committed to helping customers experience a smooth transition to Microsoft® Windows 7 and has tested its CS4 products and components on Windows 7 Ultimate edition. Results found that our solutions perform to Adobe's high standards of quality and performance, and we are confident the CS4 products and components will perform as expected. But as with any new release of an operating system, unexpected issues may arise that were not uncovered during our testing efforts. We encourage our customers to review the updated support information.

I am going to install or upgrade to Windows 7. How will this affect my Creative Suite 4 products?

If you are upgrading to Windows 7 from an earlier Windows version, you may be required to reinstall your Creative Suite product. For detailed instructions regarding the requirements for possible reinstallation of your Creative Suite products and components, see the Knowledgebase article.

Will earlier versions of the Creative Suite family products and components support Windows 7?

Adobe Creative Suite 4 and Creative Suite 3 solutions were included in our testing efforts. While older Adobe and Macromedia applications may install and run on Windows 7, they were designed, tested, and released to the public several years before this new operating system became available and have not been tested. Older versions of Adobe software will unfortunately not be updated to support the shipping editions of Windows 7, since our engineering and test teams focus on more current configurations. For known issues regarding the running of Creative Suite products and components under Windows 7, see the Knowledgebase article.

Will Adobe continue to test and support its CS4 applications on Windows 7?

Yes. Adobe sets high standards of quality, stability, and reliability for our professional products, and we plan to continue to test our CS4 products and components with Windows 7. As with any new release of an operating system, unexpected issues may arise that were not uncovered during our testing efforts.

If you encounter any issues, report them by completing a bug report. Note that while we appreciate the submissions we do not always send responses; however, we do review the information closely with the appropriate teams and continue to test and monitor the user experience.

Do any of the CS4 applications require updates to be compatible with Windows 7?

No. Creative Suite 4 products and components do not require updates at this time. However, we do recommend that you check for updates at regular intervals.

If I do require updates for Windows 7 and my Adobe products and components, what should I do?

Necessary updates are generally made available through the Adobe Updater, a utility that is installed with Adobe products or components to manage the download and installation of updates for you. If the automatic notification feature in Adobe Updater is turned on, Adobe Updater is designed to alert you automatically when the updates are available. You can then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the updates. Alternatively, you can open the Adobe product or component that requires an update, choose Help > Updates to open the Adobe Updater, check all of the updates you want, and then click Download and Install Updates.

Lastly, you can also visit the downloads page to monitor when updates are posted, and then download and install the updates for each relevant CS4 product or component.

I use many plug-ins with my Adobe software. Are these plug-ins compatible with Windows 7?

For third-party plug-ins and related hardware components, contact the original manufacturer for guidance on these products' support for Windows 7.

I run an earlier version of Creative Suite software on a non Windows 7 based system.

Will Adobe support the version of Creative Suite that I am currently running on an earlier version of Windows?

Adobe does not plan to make any changes to the existing complimentary and paid support programs that are enjoyed by our customers. For details on these programs, visit the support page.

I am running a 30-day trial version of one of Adobe's CS4 products. What happens if I decide to upgrade to Windows 7?

It is recommended you perform a clean installation of Windows 7 before initiating a 30-day trial of an Adobe product. If you are already running an Adobe trial and install/upgrade Windows 7, the trial unfortunately expires before the 30 days due to a reset in the operating system.
